In the 10th and 11th centuries Scots Gaelic was at its most popular as a language where most people who lived in Scotland spoke the language. Today there is only around 1.6% who can speak Gaelic. Most pro- Gaelic speakers would say that this was the plan of the English – to rid the British Isles of its Gaelic language and replace it by the English language. But there are a number of reasons for the decline of Gaelic as a language.

Firstly, by about 1400 the actual variation between the Highlands and the Lowlands had been solidly recognized. A scholarly man known as John of Fordun had this to point out concerning the differences between the highlanders and the lowlanders in 1380:

“The people from the coast tend to be of domestic and civilised behavior, trusty, patient, as well as urbane, respectable in their attire, affable, and tranquil, devout in Divine worship, but constantly willing to reject a wrong at the hands of their opponents. The highlanders and also individuals from the islands, in contrast, are a savage and untamed nation, rude or obnoxious and self-sufficient, given to rapine, ease-loving, smart and also speedy to master, comely in person, yet unattractive in dress, inhospitable towards the English people as well as language, and, due to the variety of dialog, also to their own nation, and very vicious. These people are nevertheless faithful and obedient to their own king and nation, and easily made to submit to regulation, if appropriately ruled.”

So it could be argued that the main reason for the decline in the Gaelic language was due to the great divide between the differing parts of Scotland. And by the sixteenth century the divergence between the two was at an all time high due to in the main, historic reasons and a different language being spoken. James VI had two main principles for his Highland policy – one being a way to make an income and the other was for it to be used for plantation. He considered that the highlanders and particularly the islanders were not paying their fair taxation and he wanted to change this.

In 1597 he set up three burghs within the Highlands with the intention of permitting a number of the lowlanders to rule. With the strengthening Campbell clan as well as the detest for the lowlanders of the Highlanders and the Islanders, a lot more disruption was to follow. It was costing the King greater expense than he cared to pay.

Whenever a person or group of people try to live their lives free, those who are stuck in unhappy lives will be jealous. Some people have a hard time letting go, freeing themselves from the day to day trials and tribulations of everyday life even for a little while. Others seek an escape from the stress and anxiety often associated with modern day life.

I guess for me, that’s part of why I am a Biker. There is something about riding a bike that inspires a sense of freedom in me. The open road, the wind in my face, the smells, getting back to nature, the power of my bike. It’s all these things and more that make me feel free. It’s unfortunate that there are some people who, for whatever reason, can’t find something or someway to let go and experience the sense of freedom that we do. These people, for whatever reason, are the ones who point to us and call us rogues or rebels. They say that what we are doing is wrong and that our culture is a “disruptive influence.”

As Bikers, we live our lives a little differently. We work and have responsibilities, but we still know the feeling of freedom. Maybe its because we smile just a bit more and are a bit more relaxed that turns these people green with envy?

A person who works hard and has no free time sees a person on the road riding his or her motorcycle and thinks “I wish that was me!” The thought of being free doesn’t leave their mind. They long for it. They crave it badly! How many of you out their have had a friend tell you how they have always wanted to buy a Motorcycle and just go out riding? How many of them ever actually do?

Here is a typical story : A man is driving home from work when he see’s a group of motorcycle riders pull up next to him. He looks at this group of people riding together having a great time, He starts to think, “I wish that was me”. He then decides, “I’m going to buy a Motorcycle!” He starts thinking about riding. How great it will be to have his wife on the back of his bike and the wind in his face. We could ride up to the lake or maybe that little motel way up in the Mountains. Thinking of the great times he will have he starts to feel that small sense of freedom. He thinks “This must be what those Biker get to feel, Wow!”

He turns into the driveway, parks his truck and rushes into the house to tell his wife about his fantastic idea. “Hi honey, I’m going to buy a Motorcycle.” His wife looks at him and says “What? Did you get overwhelmed by the fumes at work again?” “You can’t ride a Motorcycle. The man answers back, “I’ll learn!”

“You must be crazy”, she says. “Those things are death traps! You will kill yourself and we can’t afford it!” “Honey this is something I really want” replies the man. “NO NO NO!!! I won’t have one of those things in my house! What kind of message would it send to the kids, our neighbors?”

They argue about it, but it the end, the man never gets his motorcycle. He never goes to the lake with his wife or takes that trip up to the little motel in the mountains. He never feels the real sense of freedom one can only get when taking a long trip on a motorcycle. He spends the rest of his life wishing he had never seen that group of Motorcycles. He is angry and bitter.

Now when he see’s Bikers he puts them down. He hates Bikers, not because of who or what they are, but because of what he can never be. He hates them because of what they represent. They represent a kind of freedom, sense of belonging, a oneness with nature and the world that he longs for, he craves, but can never have.

We live here in America, the home of the free, but many are not free. They have never experienced the sense of freedom that can only be experienced on two wheels and, for whatever reason, never will. They live boring, uneventful. “safe” lives and complain about those who don’t.

Don’t hate these envious people, pity them for they will never know the sense of freedom and brotherhood we get from riding with a group of our Bro’s. They’ll never know the wind in their face, the feeling of peace and oneness with nature we feel as we ride threw the country side or down a long lonely highway. They’ll never know the clarity of mind that comes from a long ride alone or the closeness and bond of a long ride or weekend away with someone special. Just thank your higher power that you’ve found a way to escape, a way to be free, even if for some it’s just on the weekends.

Ride Safe and Ride Free because when it all come down to it, this is all about the Ride!

What a crazy world we live in today. It’s come to a point where you just don’t know what to believe any more. The “news” media has gone from investigative reporting to regurgitating Government and Corporate “News Releases” as actual news.

The thing that I don’t understand is, some people actually believe everything they see on TV or read in the paper or on the Internet. You can tell people the Sky is falling but if it wasn’t reported on CNN, People will just think your some kind of crazy Chicken Little. Chunks of the sky could be hitting them in the head and they still wouldn’t believe it. If CNN reports that the Sky is Falling and states the reason as “human over consumption of oxygen”, people start trying to figure out how to stop breathing so they can stop the Sky from falling. It doesn’t matter if the real reason is some new Military Toxin.

Let’s say there is some national disaster and you say something different from the official Government release on why and how it happened. Now you’re some kind of crazy Conspiracy Nut. Again It doesn’t matter what kind of proof you have, what kind of scientific evidence you try and present, you’re just a nut and no one wants to listen to you. Because We all know the United States Government would never lie to us. They’d never conspire against the people of this country. Anyone remember The “Gulf of Tonkin” incident? Iran/Contra? Weapons of Mass Destruction?

We’re used to hearing about the Government Controlled Media in places like China and Russia, but what of the “News” media in the United States? Just a few months ago our Government was besieged with letters, email, and phone calls by people who were vehemently against the so-called Wall Street Bail-Out. At first the measure failed. CNN broadcast a week of programming designed to “educate” us stupid Americans on the reasons why we needed to pay for this bail-out. The next week it passed.

This is not the “Free Press” our founding fathers envisioned. Our founding fathers envisioned a “Free Press” that would help to keep our Politicians and our Government honest, as a way to speak out against injustices, not an “education” tool.

What has happen to the Spirit of the American people? When did we stop demanding to know the truth about what is going on? When did the Truth get too hard for us to handle? Is it fear? It seems every time someone uses the phrase “National Security”, that somehow, we understand that’s all we need to know. Is it apathy? What happened to the days of protest, the intolerance of greed and corruption? Throughout History there are examples of great Societies that have fallen, not from outside forces, but from corruption within.

We live in a world of the Future where things that seemed impossible yesterday are common place by tomorrow. For some of us, we’re too busy trying to make it to tomorrow to worry about what is happening politically in the World. We’re too busy working and taking care of our families to seek the truth or get involved with some kind of cause. Many still believe that eventually the Government will take care of us, that despite the loss of our industry, the loss of our jobs, the loss of our freedoms, and the lowering of our standard of living, the Governments still have our best interests at heart.

When we see Governments around the World curtailing our right of assembly, our freedom of speech, do we stand up or do we accept it? Lately, it seems that these political entities have been giving those of us in Motorcycle Clubs a little extra attention. Why is that? Most Motorcycle Clubs are made up of principled, patriotic men who value family, brotherhood and their communities above all else. Many are Veterans of Wars past and present. Why are we viewed as Radicals & Extremists? The Governments of the world have begun pushing hard to break us up, shut us down. As a Biker and a Member of a Motorcycle Club I see many injustices taking place all over the world.

I have seen Motorcycle Clubs names and logos seized in dirty under handed methods. Large Clubs charged with Crimes and their members locked away. Government Agents inserted into clubs for years so that they can introduce drugs and violence into the clubs in an effort to bring them down. Ex Members and “friends” of Motorcycle Clubs offered Millions of Dollars if they can come up with charges against these Motorcycle Clubs!

Just as in any culture or society, there are going to be a few bad apples. The problem is, the Government and the Media have conspired to paint everyone in the Biker World with the same brush. I’ll bet it takes you 5 seconds to think of a News Story, Movie, or Documentary that you’ve seen portraying Bikers negatively, but I bet you can’t think of one that shows us feeding the poor, protecting the children, or raising money for every disease known to man.

Watching Motorcycle Clubs slowly being taken down in such blatantly unjust ways is scaring the hell out of me. What makes me sad is at the same time these wolves are getting through the gate and destroying the MC world, Many Motorcycle Clubs continue to fight against each other! These fights are embellished and sensationalized on TV and in the press. They are then used by the Governments of the world as the fuel they need to continue to shut down all Motorcycle Club’s.

Motorcycle Clubs, much like the United States of America, were started with incredible Ideals. Both set down on paper what they were about and what they stood for. It is time for both Motorcycle Clubs and Americans to get back to their core beliefs. I believe with all my Heart that true Members of Motorcycle Clubs hold the ideals of Freedom and Brotherhood higher than any other group anywhere.

As I have said many times before I am no Hippie and I do not preach peace or love, I am a true Biker! It is just that I have realized “Rome is burning” and only by working together can we hope to be able to stop the fire! Motorcycle Clubs are like people and not everyone will always get along, We are always going to have our differences.

What needs to happen now is for members of every Motorcycle Club in the World to look deep inside and ask themselves, “What is the most important thing to me?” If you truly believe in Motorcycle Club Brotherhood, and you have felt true Motorcycle Club Brotherhood, the answer will be simple. We as members of Motorcycle Clubs, need to set aside our differences and unite as one so that we may work together to save the Motorcycle Club world! We must fight against those who would take away everything we are and have us live as slaves.

Next time you hear that a Government or one of its agents has brought down another Brother or a Motorcycle Club you didn’t like, don’t celebrate, because the next time it will be you and your club. They won’t stop until we are all gone.

The quantity of people who are newly unemployed are starting to request less unemployment benefits. The government claimed on Thursday that the quantity of requests for unemployment benefits are finally starting to taper off. The unfortunate news is that the number of individuals who are still collecting jobless benefits has risen to 6.78 million, which is the biggest amount on record ever since 1967.

The Labor Department claimed that the quantity of primary claims for jobless benefits has decreased from 636,000 to 623,000. The amount is below the estimates given from analysts of 635,000.

Additional good news came from the government today stated that demand for ?expensive manufactured merchandise? posted their second rise in three months in April. This may possibly mean that the manufacturing downturn is finally lessening also.

There was also bad news in the report from Thursday. The government released information stating that the sale of new houses were dull in April. At the side of that information, 12% of homeowners were behind schedule on their mortgage payment or were previously in foreclosure.

Initial jobless claims a year ago were at 378,000, and we were officially in a slump then also. The numbers at this time are still a long way from what a successful economy should be performing at. With unemployment claims increasing, even if they aren?t rising at the rate that some were expecting, many are expecting the unemployment numbers to climb from 8.9% in April to 10% by the end of the year. 5.7 million jobs have been lost since December 2007 ? The most ever since World War 2.

California ended up reporting the biggest increase in claims of only 5,447. The increases could be directly accredited to firings in building, commerce and service industries that tend to cater to higher end customers. At the same time, Michigan reported a reduction in claims. A plunge of 9,758 in that state was said to be directly associated to the cut in firings in the automobile industry.

It is nice to see some improvement in the jobless claims across the board. Once more, as a just starting out graduate any information coming from the employment area in the upbeat direction is welcomed information. I?m positive there are an abundance of individuals who are either without a job or who are concerned about their own job safekeeping that are looking at this information and breathing a little sigh of relief at the same instance.

California voted for the three strikes rule in 1995. There was much concern by CA criminal lawyers regarding the effect of such a law. Criminals who were second and third time offenders got much more severe sentences. For example, when Curtis Wilkerson stole some socks, he was prosecuted for a felony. Since he was a convicted robber in 1981 at the age of 19, he got life in prison.

A group from Stanford law school has now dedicated themselves to getting folks like Wilkerson out of prison. Two professors are heading up the mission to right some of the most ridiculous three-strike wrongs. There are over one-thousand 3-strikers who have written the group to have their cases reviewed. So far the group has been victorious on three occasions.

The history of the three strike rule is sad and ugly. When two young girls were murdered by individuals who already had criminal records, the state of California, as well as the country went into mob mode. The law was approved by an overwhelming seventy two percent of voters.

The rule is structured so that second time offenders get 2 times the regular sentence and 3 time offenders get 25 years to life in prison. But the real kicker is that for your third strike you can get life even for non-violent or serious crimes. Therefore, petty theft becomes punishable by life.

In California today, there are people locked up for life for stealing loose change, stealing tools from a parked truck, and other petty offenses. Many of these will be in prison for life for committing these petty thefts. The three strike rule has really done nothing more than create an untenable situation for the California prison system.

A study by the states non-partisan Legislative Analysts Office after the laws first decade found that crime rates in California, as in the nation, began declining before the law was passed, and that counties which used the law more had no better results than counties which used it less. On the other hand, the law lengthens the average prison sentence and raises the average age of inmates, so costing the state an additional $500m a year. This in a state now frantically making cuts to avoid insolvency.

People need money right now because many are losing their jobs. Are Obama grants a way to get some of that desperately needed money to get buy? Grants are mostly given to institutions for research and learning. Grants for individuals do exist but there are not many of them and they are hard to get.

If there is any good news, it is that grants have often been overlooked by people as a way to get through hard times. Not that many individuals know much about grants and how to get them and there is little information in the news. This increases your chance of getting one if you give it a try.

You should never have to pay to apply for a government grant and if you are lucky enough to get one, it does not have to be repaid. Like anything the government gets involved with though, the application process can be confusing and difficult for the average person. Add to that the fact that most grants go to organizations and companies and you have a situation where the demand greatly exceeds the availability.

Americans have been hoping the stimulus bill would start to turn the economy around and as yet it seems nothing has changed. As peoples situations become more dire, even it things do begin to make a turn for the better it might be too late for many. The amount of debt that some people have might be too great to overcome with the job situation being so bleak.

The situation is made worse by the spiraling downward effect that is happening everywhere. Everything is interrelated and when one industry or group of people is having a tough time it eventually affects everyone else. It is hard right now, no matter how much money you have or how great a job you have to not be affected in some way by this atrocious economy.

“We should celebrate all things spiritual! Afterall, all religions basically teach the same thing: respect and love for one’s neighbor and doing good to human kind.”

This way of thinking is all the rage. The woods are a ‘teemin with lawyers, doctors, teachers, and talk show hosts who fervently hold to this brand of pluralism.

Let’s pause and think about this for a bit. Is it true to say that all religions are basically the same and/or all religions lead to heaven?

If you actually study the main tenets of the world’s major faiths, you’ll find out that they are quite different.

Just start with the different faith’s concept of God. Lining up the different characteristics of God should cure you of pluralism. The concepts aren’t just different, mind you: many of them are contradictory–they can’t both be true. For example, God is either personal (Islam, Judaism, Christianity), or He is impersonal (many forms of Hinduism). Either He is a trinity (Christianity), or not (Islam). The same thing happens when you line up each religion’s core doctrine on other things.

In no way, shape, or form can all these beliefs be true! Take yet another example: beliefs about the afterlife. Some religions claim you go to heaven or hell, while others claim you are annihilated. Still others claim you are reincarnated. These are not personal taste claims; these are claims about reality, and therefore the laws of logic apply to them. When you die, you can either go to heaven, rot in the ground, or be reincarnated, but in no circumstance can you do them all (Or they can all be false. That is a possibility)!

I’ve heard an objection that when it comes to religion, “what’s true for you might not be true for me.” Is this a good way of thinking? It is not like we are talking about food tastes, which are subjective. No, these are all claims about what really happens after you die. They apply to reality. That doesn’t mean they are false; it just means that they can’t all be true.

Another objection is that all this reflects a western way of thinking. In the west, so the argument goes, it is either this OR that, but in the east, many people are comfortable embracing contradiction. A more common way to think in the east when it comes to contradicting beliefs is “both/and.”

Is this correct? No. It might seem on the surface that the “both/and” reigns supreme in the east when it comes to contradictory beliefs, but nothing could be further from the truth. Notice that you can run, but you can’t hide from the either/or: the easterners who tout the “both/and” logic choose that way of thinking *over and against* the so-called western view. The either/or pops up in pesky ways, doesn’t it?

Be skeptical of the grand claims of pluralism. Sure, Gatorade and anti-freeze might both be green liquids, but it’s the differences that matter when choosing which to drink!

The amount of wasteful spending in this country, to say the least, is completely outrageous. The money being allotted for frivolous spending throughout the government of the United States of America is completely out of control. All the bills that are sighted in this report are from the fiscal year of 2009.

The first Bill that I cringed at was a piece of legislation passed for Hawaii and Guam. Rep. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), and Rep. Madeline Bordallo (D-Guam) requested $1,200,000 for two projects to deal with Brown Snake Tree Control. Since 1996, $14.6 million has been earmarked in both Hawaii and Guam for the purpose of Brown Snake Tree Control. Whats next? Are our Representatives going to earmark a Bill for Great White Ocean Control? Useless spending. Thats all this is. Are the Brown Snakes of Hawaii and Guam a threat issue? Why not use the $14.6 million that has been allotted to Hawaii and Guam over the past 13 years for something more efficient. Why not invest this money in a program for early education for the children of this nation. They are our future.

The next Bill that smells like bacon, is one that House Appropriator Carolyn Kilpatrick ( D-Mich ), requested $50,000 for. This money is being used for tree replacement in River Rouge, MI. According to a census completed in 2000, this town had a population of less then 10,000 people. Could this money not have had a better use? How many trees do you get for $50,000? Does a town of less then 10,000 people really need this many trees. Why not start a community outreach program to keep kids off the streets and off of drugs. Education, in my opinion, is more important then a few thousand trees.

Military spending receives a large amount of attention. Usually, the attention is on spending for the Iraq war. This story is not about war spending but about spending on an access road. Representative Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii) joined Senators Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) in requesting $30 million. The $30 million will be spent on Phase Five of an access road at Pohakuloa Training Area. Phases One through Four have already cost $74.4 million. Now that is wasteful government spending.

Another earmark for overspending was allotted once again for none other then Military Construction. This was requested by then- Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), and Representative Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.). $9,000,000 for a dining facility/ community center at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. Thats an enormous amount of money for a gathering place. A better appropriation for these funds would be better used on veterans who have fought in wars both past and present. They have served this country and are owed any financial or medical problems they may encounter; such as clothing, medical bills, shelter, and rehabilitation if so needed. It is heartbreaking to see the amount of war veterans that are homeless on the streets and are unable to get jobs. Yet the government wants to build an oversized dining room? Why? Useless spending once again if you ask me.

And last but not least, lets end this with an extremely wasteful way to spend money. We can thank the Department of Agriculture and Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee member Tom Harkin (D-Iowa). He requested $1,791,000 for Swine Odor and Manure Management Research in Ames IA. The so called purpose of this bill is to generate and integrate knowledge for evaluation and development of new management practices that minimize nutrient excretion, malodorous emissions, and the release of pathogens into the environment as well as have a positive impact on animal health.
