It is not hard to understand why fishing is such a popular sport. Some enjoy fishing for the thrill of it all while others like to catch fresh fish to have for dinner. It takes a lot of practice and patience to perfect these techniques, but it will help you have the most success on all your fishing adventures. One involves choosing the right lures depending on what the water is like where you are fishing.

One of the best techniques is one that can be used when fishing in clear water. Bright colored lures work well but when the water is very clear it makes the lighter colored lures more difficult to see. Especially if it is sunny out, the lights reflecting and the lightness of the lures will make everything blend in together making it hard for fish to see your lure. Night fishing is a passion for many and it can be quite successful.

More fish come out at night and as long as you know what you are doing and use the right fishing techniques you can catch lots of fish. You need a lot of patience, but if you get the boat out and are waiting there early you can save yourself scaring off the fish with the noise of your boat motor later on. Bringing a black light is a good idea because it makes it easier to see the fish. Another of the most effective fishing techniques is one known as doodling.

This is a type of worm fishing technique, one that is taught by all the biggest fishing gurus around the world. Once you have attached your lure you simply drop the line to the desired depth. Once your line has reached the desired depth you want to start wiggling it a bit. Be sure to only wiggle gently or you are actually going to scare fish off instead of attracting them.

Over time as you go on your own fishing adventures you will start to perfect these techniques. Over time, every fisherman comes up with his own tried and true fishing techniques. It takes practice and a lot of patience to become a good fisherman. You will have a lot of fun fishing if you use the right techniques and actually end up catching any fish.

We all know that fishing can help us with our health and if you do not like you can go for the bodybuilding supplements with your body and the cosmetic dental surgery.

The Baltimore defense shut down the Carolina attack, and QB Joe Flacco played a virtually mistake free game as the Ravens built a 14-3 halftime lead before going on to beat the Panthers 17-13. The banged up Panthers scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to make the final score respectable.

Both teams played their starters well into the third quarter, and the Ravens held a 17-3 lead when they left the game. Second year QB Joe Flacco looked sharp, throwing for 247 yards and a touchdown on 23 of 28 passing. After the game, Flacco commented simply:

We were in a groove.

Tight end Todd Heap was the recipient of Flacco’s TD pass and noted:

“Everybody was making plays, and I feel like we’re heading right where we want to be.

Both sides of the ball were clicking on all cylinders, which pleased the Ravens defensive leader Ray Lewis:

“That’s what’s most exciting, the way we are clicking both offensively and defensively. The bottom line is everyone is lining up and playing fast. We’re all playing well right now.

QB Jake Delhomme had a decent game, throwing for 180 yards on 11 of 16 passing but was unable to put his team on the scoreboard. After the contest, Delhomme tried to sound a positive tone:

“We did some decent things but still they’re a very good defense.

Linebacker Jon Beason got to watch the game from the sidelines while nursing a sore knee, and wasnt pleased with what he saw from the Carolina stop unit:

“Tackling was horrible tonight. I think we’ve got to do a better job in our man-to-man coverage.”

Improving the teams scoring defense is a top priority for Carolina this season. The Panthers allowed 30 or more points in five of their final seven games last year. For a franchise that has long prided itself on defensive tenacity, that put a damper on an otherwise successful 12-4 season.

Baltimore will wrap up its NFL preseason on the road as they face the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome on Thursday. The Panthers will host the Pittsburgh Steelers in their final exhibition contest.

Its been a rough NFL preseason for last years Superbowl runner up. The Arizona Cardinals have only scored one touchdown in two games as they’ve stumbled to a 0-2 record. On Saturday night the visiting San Diego Chargers added to their offensive woes en route to a 17-6 victory. The Chargers evened their record at 1-1, while the Cards slumped to 0-2.

The Chargers cornerbacks performed admirably against Arizona, and Antonio Cromartie said scoring defense has been a focus for the team during the preseason:

“That’s one of our biggest focuses. Do whatever you’ve got to to keep them out of the end zone. We did that.”

Despite the teams lack of offensive productivity Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt wasnt particularly concerned:

“I’m disappointed that we haven’t had more touchdowns, obviously but I will say this, we haven’t game planned in the red zone. A lot of times when we game plan in the red zone we’re one of the best teams in the NFL, because we put our players in a position to best give them a chance to win.’

QB Warner agreed with his coach:

“It is disappointing because we had some opportunities we didn’t capitalize on like we wanted to but there is going to be a lot of stuff we can learn from tonight. We will get better and be all right in a couple of weeks.”

The Chargers offense hasn’t lit up the scoreboard either, and their pass protection has been particularly weak. San Diego coach Norv Turner indicated that this was a problem:

“The things we take a lot of pride in around here. Tonight our guys saw we have some work to do.”

LaDanian Tomlinson saw limited action”his first in the preseason since 2005:

“I think it was just good to get in there and start to get a rhythm.

Arizona will host Green Bay on Friday night, while San Diego will continue their NFL preseason slate in Atlanta as they play the Falcons at the Georgia Dome on Saturday night.

The Edmonton Eskimos showed a flair for the dramatic in Saturday night CFL action. Trailing 30-21 late in the fourth, Edmonton came all the way back to defeat the visiting Hamilton Tiger Cats 31-30. Noel Prefontaine kicked a clutch 48 yard field goal in the final minute to provide the margin of victory. Edmontons Jonte Buhl intercepted the football with 15 seconds left to put the win on ice. Edmonton improved to 5-3, while Hamilton dropped to 4-4.

Despite the exciting finish to the game, CFL bettors who backed the Eskimos were left holding losing tickets. Hamilton easily covered the spread as +7 road underdogs, improving to 5-3 against the number while Edmonton dropped to 3-5. The 61 points scored put the game OVER the posted total of 54. It was Hamiltons second straight OVER, but only their third of the season against five UNDER games.

The Eskimos Arkee Whitlock was the big catalyst on offense, scoring three touchdowns including an important one late in the game to cut the Edmonton deficit to three. Edmonton QB Ricky Ray also enjoyed a productive game, amassing 347 yards on 25 of 33 passing with a touchdown and an interception.

Hamilton also put up good offensive numbers, though QB Kevin Glenn did throw two interceptions. Glenn finished with 326 yards on 22 of 39 passing with three touchdowns. The Ti-Cats running backs also fumbled the ball twice, giving the Esks a 4-1 turnover advantage that went a long way to determining the outcome of the game.

Edmonton is now in sole possession of first place in the CFL West with a 5-3 record, two points ahead of Saskatchewan and Calgary. Hamilton is in second place in the CFL East, though are quickly losing sight of the leagues top team. The Montreal Alouettes are threatening to run away with the division, leading Hamilton by six points with a 7-1 mark. Making that margin even more impressive is the fact that the Alouettes were idle this weekend. The Alouettes are already in danger of leaving the rest of the division to play for second place.

Both teams will be in action on September 7th, as each faces their provincial rival in a traditional Labour Day battle. Edmonton will play at Calgary, while Hamilton will host the Toronto Argonauts. Both sets of rivals will rematch at the others home field just four days later. These are among the most heated rivals in CFL football, and Labour Day games are a long running tradition in Canada.

After an erratic start to the 2009 NFL regular season, the New England Patriots have finally found some balance to their offense. Tom Brady had carried all of the weight in the Pats first two regular season games due to their one dimensional offense, but on Sunday he received some long overdue help from running back Fred Taylor who ran for 105 yards. As a result, the Patriots dominated the time of possession battle holding onto the ball for nearly 40 minutes en route to a 26-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

NFL betting enthusiasts who backed the Patriots as -4 home favorites cashed their tickets with the 16 point victory. It was New Englands first ATS triumph of the season, while Atlanta lost to the money for the first time in the 2009 campaign. The 36 combined points scored went UNDER the total of 45. Both teams have played two of their three games UNDER the total so far this season.

Running back Taylor talked about the importance of a balanced offense in his postgame interview:

“You want to be balanced going into games, but some situations don’t allow for it. You want to establish that momentum and look over across the ball and see the frustration in the defensive guys’ eyes.”

New England was also very effective on defense, holding the Falcons Tony Gonzalez to one catch early in the fourth quarter. An obviously frustrated Gonzalez talked about the Patriots defensive scheme after the game:

“They did the same thing they always do to me, ‘bracket coverage. If I get single coverage I am going to make them pay for it eventually.”

New England safety Brandon McGowan joked that the plan was to hold Gonzalez without any catches:

“The plan was for him to not have any catches and he had one so obviously the plan failed.”

Patriots running back Sammy Morris said it was simply a matter of making plays:

“We were making plays in the second half we weren’t making in the previous weeks. It was directly related to making the third-and-shorts and fourth-and-shorts. The offense is able to stay on the field and you’re able to get more things accomplished.”

The Falcons will enjoy a bye weekend before returning to action on the road against the San Francisco 49ers on October 11th. Theyll host the Chicago Bears the following Sunday before playing the Cowboys at Dallas. New England will host the Baltimore Ravens, with the Patriots a -1 home favorite. The total in the game has been set at 44.

The Pittsburgh Steelers used a 17 point fourth quarter outburst to break open a close game and send the Arizona Cardinals to defeat by a 20-10 score in a NFL preseason rematch of this years Superbowl.

NFL bettors who favored the defending Superbowl champions in this matchup cashed their tickets as the Steelers covered as -3 home favorites. The combined 30 points scored stayed UNDER the posted total of 33.

The big catalyst for the Steelers offense was undrafted rookie Issac Redman out of Bowie State. Redman, listed as the Steelers #7 depth chart running back scored two rushing touchdowns in the decisive fourth quarter run. After the game, he said that hee knew that he had to take advantage of the opportunities to demonstrate his skills in a game situation:

“This team prides itself on being able to find those free agents that are capable of playing. Hopefully I can be that next free agent. I knew I had to make an impression, or I might not even make it to the first preseason game.”

Both teams played their starting quarterbacks for only two offensive series. The Steelers Ben Roethlisbergerwas guardedly optimistic about his performance:

“Overall, without looking at film, I think it was OK. I think we had a couple of plays with a few breakdowns, but it just felt good to go against somebody other than your own guys.”

Arizonas Kurt Warner was satisfied with his performance, but noted that the first preseason game had come up on him quickly:

“I felt like we moved the ball and did what we wanted to. It seems like this game came pretty quick. When we were in the locker room, we were thinking, `Man, it is here already.’ ”

The star receivers for each team–Arizonas Larry Fitzgerald and Pittsburghs Superbowl MVP Santonio Holmes–each caught a single pass in a couple of series of action.

Pittsburgh will open the NFL regular season on Thursday, September 10th as they host the Tennessee Titans. Arizona will kick of their campaign on Sunday, September 13th at home against the San Francisco 49ers.

‘The Golden Jet’ Bobby Hull was the most feared goal scorer of the’60’s and’70’s and arguably the greatest left wing to ever play professional hockey. Along with teammate Stan Mikita, Hull made the Chicago Blackhawks one of the NHL’s true offensive powerhouses. He and Mikita were the first NHL players to use curved stick blades, which made his already wicked slapshot even more difficult to stop. This was a very significant development in pro hockey, and now its rare to find a player that plays with the flat stick blade that was once commonplace before Hull and Mikita’s revolutionary modification.

Hull was born and raised on a dairy farm near Belleville, Ontario. As a teenager it was obvious that he was on a fast track to NHL stardom, and he joined the Chicago Blackhawks not long after his 18th birthday. He would finish second in the leagues rookie of the year balloting in his first season and within a couple of years would become one of the NHLs marquee superstars. In’61, he played an important role in the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup championship victory.

Hull made history in’66 by becoming the first player to score more than 50 goals in a season. His 51st goal surpassed Montreal Canadiens’ legends Bernie Boom Boom Geoffrion and Maurice Rocket Richard and earned him a 7 minute standing ovation from the home crowd at Chicago Stadium.

Hulls tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks ended in’72, when he jumped to the upstart World Hockey Association (WHA). Initially, Hulls response that he would jump ship for a million bucks was an offhanded joke but when the WHA ownership agreed to contribute to that sum thinking that it would provide instant credibility for the league it became a reality.

The NHL attempted to prevent Hulls jump to the WHA via litigation, but eventually he would join the Winnipeg Jets and resume his offensive dominance. On a line with Swedish superstars Ulf Nilsson and Anders Hedberg called The Hot Line, he led the Jets to two league championship AVCO Cup victories. In’77, he set a new professional hockey record with 77 goals in a season which surpassed Phil Espositos’70-71 mark of 76 by a single goal.

Injuries and chronic knee trouble would finally spell the end to Hull’s career in the WHA’s final season of’79-80. He would briefly attempt a comeback with the New York Rangers in’81, but when he proved ineffective in preseason eventually retired for good.

Modern fans may be more familiar with Hulls third son, Brett Hull, who earned NHL superstar status in his own right. The Hulls are the only father/son combination to ever score 50 goals in an NHL season. Brett Hull wore his dads retired #9 in the final games, and will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year.

Now 70 years old, Hull is still in good health and splits his time between Ontario and Chicago. He currently serves as a PR ambassador for the Blackhawks organization. He is expected to formally induct his son into the Hall of Fame at the ceremonies later this summer.

One of the reasons that the popularity of sports gambling has skyrocketed in recent years is its accessibility. It’s easy to bet on most major sports because everyone understands the basics, which teams are good and why they win. Horse handicapping, on the other hand, is a completely different and somewhat arcane discipline. Where there are some shared concepts, success at sports betting doesn’t guarantee the same playing the ponies. Legendary sports handicapper Jimmy ‘The Greek’ Snyder was famous for killing the books with his sports plays–and giving it all back with his inept horse bets.

The information below is the bare bones basics of what you need to know to enjoy a day at the horse track. If you’re interested in becoming a serious horse handicapper, you’re best advice to start with one of the countless books or DVDs that deal specifically with the discipline.

Do your reading: When you arrive at the horse track you should purchase a copy of the Daily Racing Form (DRF for short) and the track program. The DRF is basically the ‘bible’ of horse race handicapping, and offers morning line odds, horse, trainer, jockey statistics and information on each race at every major track across the country. The track program offers similar information for that individual venue, often in more ‘user friendly’ form.

You’re playing against other bettors, not the racetrack: A big difference between sports wagering and horse betting is the function of ‘the house’. In horse racing, you’re not playing against the track–instead, you’re betting against the other patrons. The track simply serves as a ‘banker’, accepting money and paying bets. For this service, they take a percentage of the money bet on each race (called the ‘takeout’). The odds on a horse aren’t set by the track, but rather by the amount of money bet on each entry.

So where do the odds in the newspaper or program come from? The so-called morning odds are basically educated guesses as to where the wagering will go. Its roughly analogous to overnight lines in sports gambling. They can be helpful as a guideline, but may or may not be indicative as to how the actual wagering will go.

Horse handicapping basics: This is where horse racing gets complex–there are countless theories about how to handicap a horse race. Some handicappers consider the breeding lineage of the horse, while others are more concerned with past performance. Still others put more weight on the training a horse has received, or its workout performance.

Once a handicapper gets an idea what will happen in the race, he has to factor the available odds into the proposition. A favorite may be an unattractive wagering prospect due to a prohibitively high price, while a long shot may be a good wagering value based on a high potential payback. It all boils down to wagering value, which is simply a matter of doing a math. Teaching the youth of America solid math skills is crucial for no other reason than to help them gamble effectively and profitably.

Training and bloodlines: Handicappers often focus on a horse’s breeding lineage, considering the quality of the bloodlines and the racing pedigree of his parents and grandparents. Others put great focus on a horse’s trainers. An ‘A-list’ trainer can often get the most out of a horse much in the same way an elite level NFL coach can cause a team to ‘over perform’.

Jockeys: Jockeys are independent agents, and thus to make the most money they need to win the most races. The more a jockey wins, the better ‘rides’ he gets and the more money he makes. Surprisingly, many serious horse players put minimal importance on the jockey. It’s essentially a case where even the best jockey can’t win with a bad horse. In other words, if a jockey is seen as ‘competent’ there are many other more significant factors for the handicapper to consider.

Dedication and Discipline: There’s not a set formula for successful horse handicapping, so try different things and find what works for you. And, as always, don’t go overboard with the money you wager and particularly until you get a feel for what you’re doing. If you’re interested in learning more, check out the Daily Racing Form website.

With three NFL preseason wins under their belt there was every reason to think that the San Francisco 49ers would phone in their final exhibition game against the San Diego Chargers. And thats exactly what they did”the Chargers scored at least six points in every quarter against the Niners reserves en route to a 26-7 home victory.

San Diego’s 19 point margin of victory allowed them to easily cover the pointspread. The Chargers had been installed as -3 point home favorites, and that was covered by halftime when they took a 13-7 lead into the locker room.

The game was such an exercise in irrelevance that Chargers coach Norv Turner called for an onside kick to open the contest in order that his team could practice the situation in real world game conditions. San Diego would recover the onside kick, and then quickly score on a 39 yard touchdown pass from QB Billy Volek to Kassim Osgood. Afterwards, Turner explained the unusual opening kickoff play call:

“It’s something we may need in a game. It’s something you’ve got to practice. I would hate for a critical situation to be the first time we did it in the regular season. We got a chance to work on it.”

The Niners starting offense”including QB Shaun Hill”got to play for one series before calling it a night. Hill said that even the minimal bit of playing time was important:

“We moved the ball a little bit. We weren’t able to get any points, but it was good to at least get out there and run some plays and get things started out there. I was happy that I got the opportunity and I think the whole offense felt that way. We think it was important to get some work tonight. We’ve got a long weekend off, so we were excited about it.”

The backup offense score the Niners only points of the game, as third string QB Nate Davis hit Jason Hill for a 21 yard touchdown pass right before halftime. In addition to their opening drive score, the Chargers got a late game touchdown pass from former Clemson University QB Charlie Whitehurst to go with four Nate Kaeding field goals.

The Chargers will start their regular season next Monday night on the road against their hated rivals the Oakland Raiders with San Diego installed as a -9 road favorite. The Niners will get their 2009 season underway on the road against the Arizona Cardinals. The Niners are a +6 road underdog in that contest, with the total set at 46.

In a victory for the highlight reels, Brett Favre completed a 32 yard touchdown pass to Greg Lewis with 2 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Minnesota Vikings to a dramatic 27-24 come from behind victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The rapidly improving 49ers dropped their first game of the year in heartbreaking fashion, while the Vikings remained undefeated at 3-0.

While the Vikings may have won the game on the scoreboard, the Niners took the decision where it really matters. San Francisco rewarded NFL betting devotees with their third pointspread cover in three games this season, cashing tickets as +6 road underdogs. It was the Vikings first setback to the spread against two victories this season. The 51 combined points scored went OVER the posted total of 39.

Favre talked about the victory after the game:

“It’s hard to even recall all of ‘em. This one was pretty special.

The game winning touchdown pass into the back corner of the endzone was upheld by video review. Niners cornerback Nate Clemens said this was a hard setback to take:

“I’ve had some hard losses. This is just another one for the list. We just have to keep chopping away.”

Greg Lewis, who caught Favres game winning touchdown pass, said that the entire offense was fired up on the final drive:

“The offensive line was fired up. Adrian was fired up, and the receivers were fired up. And Brett fell right in. He was fired up, too, like: ‘We’re going to get this done And that’s the attitude that we took out there on the field.”

In his postgame comments, Vikings coach Greg Childress commended the poise of his veteran quarterback:

“He’s been in many, many, many, many situations like that so it never hurts you to have a veteran like him going down the field.”

In the Niners locker room, coach Mike Singletary could be overheard giving his team a tough love pep talk:

“You have nothing to be looking at the floor for! You didn’t steal anything! You didn’t do anything wrong! OK? We’re going to get better! We’re going to get there! We will see them again in the playoffs, all right? You hold your head up!”

The 49ers will return home to host the St. Louis Rams next Sunday. Theyll host the Atlanta Falcons the following week before a bye week. Minnesota will host the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football next week. Theyll play at St. Louis the following weekend before returning home to host the Baltimore Ravens on 10/18.
