There are three certainties in life: Death, taxes, and the people-drawing power of a live show. Wherever you hire band to play a little Rock and Roll for the people, you can always expect a crowd to gather.

How many times have you gone to see a band that you knew you weren’t a big fan of, because what the heck, it’s a rock show, so why not? It’s not just the music, it’s the culture surrounding the music. Even if the band isn’t really playing your type of music, you know that you can go to a concert or a local show to meet new friends, to hang out, to have a few drinks and not feel like you wasted your Saturday night. Simply put, music puts butts in seats.

Music has always held an important role in the development of the human species. Ever since we were living in caves, music has driven every facet of human life and culture. In tribal culture, drum circles and other musical traditions are carried on to commemorate a successful hunt or to mark a ritual. In the more developed world, we’re never without our tunes: We keep the radio on at work all day, we put music on our cell phones, we listen to it in the car and we go to the bars to watch the local bands on weekends, even if we’re not expecting them to be all that great.

The communal aspect of music is vital to the survival of the human race. As the song says “Who put the bop in the bop sh’bop sh’bop… He made my baby fall in love with me.” How many baby boomers do you think were conceived to the sounds of Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra? If you guessed “most of them”, you’re right. Without music, it would be like that movie, Children of Men, where nobody’s having babies anymore.

The funny thing about it is that it’s sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy: People know that where there is music, there will be people, so that’s where they go. A live show is a great place to meet new friends, new business contacts, or some lookers of the opposite sex, and wherever you have music, you will have people.

Whenever you’re trying to bring in a crowd, whether you’re holding a company picnic, a public event, a big sale, or you just want to boost attendance at your bar or coffee shop, a live band is guaranteed to do the trick. People will always turn out for a live show.

When you hire bands to play a show at your event, you have guaranteed attendance. In marketing, they sometimes use the term “lure”. Now of course, a good lure is no good if what you’re actually offering isn’t worth it, but a worthwhile product or service isn’t salable without a good lure.

As far as great lures go, the advertising and public relations industries have yet to top the drawing power of live music.
